Delaware State University, also known as DSU or Del State, is an American historically black, public university located in Dover, which is the capital, and the 2nd largest city in the US state of Delaware, having a population estimated at a number of over 35 000 inhabitants (2007). Dover is also the county seat of Kent County, as well as the main city of the Dover, Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area, which occupies all of Kent County.
DSU was founded in May, 1891, as the State College for Colored Students, by the Delaware General Assembly, under the Morrill Act of 1890, becoming Delaware State University in 1993, when Delaware Governor Tom Carper approved the legislation which renamed Delaware State College into its present name.
Since its founding, DSU managed to grow, and, as of 2008, has an approximated student enrollment of 3700 students, offering them more than 50 undergraduate, 23 graduate, as well as five doctoral degrees.
The athletic teams at DSU are known as the Hornets, who participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA)’s Division I (I-AA for football), and who compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, since 1970, when the conference was founded, in various sports, such as baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball and several other sports.
The Hornets are best known for their achievements in football and basketball (men’s and women’s), in which they’ve experienced victory many times in the past years. The Hornets have won the 2007 MEAC football championship, automatically gaining a spot in the 2007 NCAA Division I FCS playoffs, as well as the 2005 MEAC championship, in basketball, also making their appearance in the 2006 and 2007 National Invitation Tournament.
